Physics 250: Advanced Laboratory
Grading & Approximate Schedule

Grading

60% Laboratory Notebook: After completion of each experiment, laboratory notebooks will be collected and graded on a 4-point scale. For more information, and for grading criteria, see the laboratory notebook page
35% Formal Papers: You will write papers about two different experiments. These papers must follow AIP guidelines, and be clearly-written and thoughtful descriptions of your experiment and results. Papers must be submitted electronically to me in either MS Word (".doc") or Acrobat (".pdf") format.
- 10% Paper on the Hall Effect: Everyone will write a formal paper on the first experiment. Every person in the class will submit a draft for peer review, but you may write the final version with another person from your laboratory group, if you wish.
- 25% Term Paper: You may choose which experiment you wish to use for the second paper. Your paper will be submitted for peer review by Friday, April 22. It will be refereed by class participants (including me), and will either be accepted or rejected for publication. Accepted papers will be of "A" or "B" quality. If your paper is accepted, you do not need to re-submit unless you wish to improve your grade. If your paper is rejected, you must revise it and re-submit by Monday, May 02. This paper must be entirely your own work.
5% Referee Reports: You will act as an anonymous peer reviewer for some of the other students' formal papers. Full credit for these assignments will be earned by submitting your review documents electronically by the time stated on the syllabus. Every hour late will result in a full grade penalty, due to the necessity for timely feedback.
